The Greenhouse launch felt ‘like coming home’

On Saturday November 30, 2024, after many years of envisioning what a nurturing, vibrant, supportive wellness destination could look like in the Caribbean, Trinidadian dermatologist Dr. Tonya Abraham-Ali finally cut the ribbon to launch The Greenhouse at Serpentine. “As I stood in the space, which was filled with both new and familiar faces, a profound sense of joy and fulfilment washed over me,” she says of the launch event. “What had once been a dream, nurtured in moments of reflection and inspiration, was now a tangible reality with the potential to really make a positive difference in people's lives.”

A solution spurred by the pandemic experience

The journey to this moment began during the COVID-19 pandemic, a time that revealed stark realities about the interconnectedness of physical and mental well-being. During those challenging and uncertain years, patients who avoided the main clinic entrance so as not to cross paths with patients being tested often commented on the tranquility they felt while walking through our garden. These seemingly small observations hinted at something deeper: the healing power of nature and the urgent need for spaces that nurture the mind and soul, not just the body.

Meanwhile, the Serpentine Dermatology team was witnessing firsthand how mental and other health struggles were affecting people of all ages. Toddlers experienced eczema flare-ups linked to isolation and lack of interaction. Primary school children battled severe anxiety and trichotillomania from prolonged screen time. Teenagers wrestled with self-harm as they navigated an increasingly disconnected world. Business professionals, weighed down by immense stress, were suddenly having to deal with psoriasis, an outward expression of their emotional turmoil.

“COVID-19 affected us all in profound ways,” Dr. Abraham-Ali notes, “but it also illuminated a critical need: holistic mental health support that addresses not just symptoms, but the root causes.”

The inspiration behind The Greenhouse

The idea for The Greenhouse at Serpentine took root in a deeply personal place. “My fathers small greenhouse,” Dr. Abraham-Ali smiles, “where he nurtured the plants that surround us today, became the seed of inspiration. Could this space, which symbolised care and growth, become a sanctuary for others seeking healing? I realised the answer was a resounding ‘yes’.

“With the wealth of brilliant mental health professionals here in Trinidad, I saw an opportunity to create something truly transformative — a space where individuals of all ages could not only seek solace, but also access the tools they need to overcome lifes challenges.”

A peek at the launch event

The evening took place in the very garden that inspired the idea. Nestor Abraham’s greenhouse has been replaced by a clean, modern annex with bevelled siding, so well integrated into the landscape it looks as if it has always been there. “What I’ve envisioned for so long is finally coming to fruition,” Dr. Abraham-Ali says.

Well over 100 guests from the fields of medicine, education, wellness, business and culture were on hand to see her vision blossom, including Dr. the Honourable Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Education; child psychologist Allyson Hamel-Smith; paediatrician Dr. Alison Murphy; gastroenterologist Dr. Maria Bartholomew; sound therapist Sophie Barcant; pharmaceutical industry expert Anthony Agostini; businesswoman Julie Avey; and reigning Miss Trinidad and Tobago Jenelle Thomas.

Current head of SERVOL Sr. Ruth Montrichard blessed the new space, and guests were treated to an organic, 100% local menu by Chef Chelsae Marie Lee Kong, as well as immunity-boosting elderberry shots by Nadia Buxo and wellness shots mixed by resident Greenhouse barista Lise de Verteuil.

The Greenhouse’s team of therapists and medical professionals were on hand to discuss their offerings with invitees, who all came away with the impression that the new wellness destination was a much needed addition to the local health landscape, especially for young people post-pandemic.

Hamel-Smith found it “so encouraging to seek a focus on mental health and happiness” and had every confidence the new offering would be a success, while designer Peter Elias — who was “impressed by the vision and effort” — said that the space “feels like coming home.” Other guests, like fashion designer Meiling, couldn’t wait to book an an Ayurvedic massage session, and educator Julie Lee Pow found the launch event to be “a delightful, enchanting and informative evening.”
